If there was ever a time we needed to be rooted, grounded, resolute, set, and settled, now is the time. In keeping with our theme for the year (“Set”) I vow to look to (rely) on Man for nothing; Be grateful when Man blesses me; and settled in relying on God (the Father) for everything.
23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven…. (KJV)
23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven …. (NIV)
We are living in a time where we may understand the clear line between “light” and “darkness”; we may observe numerous examples of the consequences of businesses operating out of integrity; our points of view may be clear; YET the ideas that propel us forward may be compromised by fear and ego.
During these turbulent times of 2017 we must turn to the ROC as well as ROI. What is ROC, you ask?
ROC is “Return on Character”….. The return we gain from leading with unshakable, settled, conviction of uncompromising truth.
In the fall of 1982, James Burke, the chairman of Johnson & Johnson, faced the biggest crisis of his career. J&J learned from a reporter that their flagship product, Tylenol, had been linked to seven poisoning deaths in the Chicago area.
No one knew how or why the capsules had been poisoned, and Burke didn’t know how widespread the danger to the public might be.
What would you do?
The Bible suggests we should start the decision-making process by considering the potential consequences of our actions.
Colossians 3:2 King James Version (KJV)
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Point of View: POV
What actions could Burke take to save his company from potential curses?
How could he bless consumers and the Tylenol brand for the future?
Burke quickly considered the consequences of several strategies, with a focus on keeping customers safe. Though it cost Johnson & Johnson $100 million in the short term, Burke convinced J&J shareholders to recall all Tylenol.
The phrase, “set your affection” means:
Be mindful of
As Burke considered the series of options in his decision making, he sat his affection on things above (people)…..not on things beneath (profit + problems).
What about you:
What Problems are you facing?
In the midst of the “problem(s)” where is your focus?
“Throughout the year we will continue to use the word, “SET” as our GPS.”
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
Point Of View (POV):
The very first time the word “Set” was used in God’s word was Genesis 1:17
Two lights on the same team, both with a common objective( to rule), but without a director dictating and navigating their every move. I was blown away when I looked up the meaning of “Set” the first time it’s mentioned in God’s Word. It means:
Be entrusted to
To be put upon (as in a burden)
To Commit to
There are no grey areas. Each light is both charged to rule, to be self governing, and to flow harmoniously. It sure seems as though, from the beginning of time, Orpheus was the intended operational model for humankind.
What are your thoughts? How do you see this playing out in your respective domain(s)?
